When a 150-foot cherry tree fell in our yard, it miraculously avoided damaging anything despite being just a stone’s throw away from our house. It felt like a stroke of luck, a moment of grace amidst potential disaster. Little did I know, that tree would mark the beginning of my journey with wood. It provided us with a bounty of boards, tabletops, and counters, igniting my passion for working with this natural material. Though the cherry wood has been used up, my fascination with woodcraft persists.
Take, for instance, this charcuterie board crafted from a Walnut tree sourced from Ontario. Each board proudly retains its live edge on both sides, lending it a distinct character. To maintain its beauty, simply clean it with a damp cloth and occasionally treat it with mineral oil. Embrace the occasional shedding of bark, for it adds to the board’s charm. For those keen on preserving the live edge, a gentle application of mineral oil using a small paintbrush does wonders.
My earliest inspiration in woodworking traces back to Matt, our guide at camp. Every trip to the Beaver Pond involved Matt skillfully carving and sanding small paddles, a coveted reward for one lucky camper. His craftsmanship left a lasting impression on me, instilling a deep appreciation for the artistry of woodwork. It’s a privilege to now create these charcuterie boards for our beloved Tan community, each one a tribute to cherished memories shared at Tanamakoon.
Named after our fondest Tan memories, these boards measure approximately 24×11 inches, serving not only as functional pieces but also as tokens of nostalgia and camaraderie.
